Chicago Mayoral Election to Head to Runoff as Incumbent Lightfoot Trails Rivals

Paul Vallas, former Chicago Public Schools CEO, will be running for the Chicago mayoral race in April, according to the Associated Press.

Vallas leads with 36% of votes, reporting 75% of precincts. This is a comfortable lead over his nearest challengers.

Brandon Johnson, Cook County Commissioner and supported by the Chicago Teachers Union (and other key labor organizations), is currently in second place with 20% of vote. That’s just over 16,000 votes more than incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Lightfoot wants to avoid becoming the first elected Mayor to lose a reelection election since Jane Byrne 1983.

Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García is currently in fourth place with 14% of the vote, with Willie Wilson in fifth place at 9%.

Vallas will receive 50% or less of the vote, and then the top two vote-getters will move on to the April 4 runoff.
