A California county district attorney has filed charges against two men in connection to the murder of 19-year-old college student Kristin Smart.

While speaking at a press conference Wednesday, San Luis Obispo County DA Dan Dow said 44-year-old Paul Flores has been charged with first-degree murder while his 80-year-old father Ruben Flores faces an accessory-after-murder charge.

According to prosecutors, Smart was reported missing in may 1996 after allegedly walking home from a college party. They suspect Paul Flores walked her home that night and was the last person to see her alive.

Dow said they served over 40 search warrants at various locations over the years before charging Flores.

“Significant new information has come in to the Sheriff’s Office that we’ve reviewed over the last two years and some very important information just a month ago,” stated the district attorney. “We’ve got physical evidence, we have witness statements, things that in our view, in the totality, have brought us to the point where we believe we can go forward and prosecute Mr. Flores for the murder of Kristin Smart.”

Flores is currently being held without bond while his father is being held on bail of $250,000. Their arraignments are slated for Thursday.
