The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging shoppers to steer clear of charcuterie meats sold at Sam’s Club and Costco due to a widespread salmonella outbreak. This advisory comes after 22 states reported cases of salmonella linked to specific products from these retailers.
Products Implicated in the Outbreak
The affected products include the Busseto charcuterie sampler, available in a nine-ounce twin pack at Sam’s Club, and the Fratelli Beretta antipasto gran beretta platter, sold in a 12-ounce twin pack at Costco. Both of these products contain a variety of Italian deli meats and have resulted in 47 reported cases of salmonella infections nationwide, with 10 individuals requiring hospitalization.
On Jan. 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a recall on Busseto’s platter. Subsequently, on Jan. 5, the CDC began its investigation on the Busseto and Fratelli Beretta brands. The salmonella outbreak is associated with every platter, regardless of the lot code, as the production of these products began in October of last year.
Prevention and Return Policy
While cooking meats to a safe internal temperature is a common preventive measure against salmonella, the USDA and CDC advise consumers to discard these products entirely, as they were marketed as ready-to-eat. However, Sam’s Club is offering a full return for these items, according to officials.
Symptoms and High-Risk Groups
Salmonella infection symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Individuals at the highest risk of infection include children under the age of 5, adults over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems.
