Celebrities at 2024 Emmys make ‘childless cat ladies’ jabs at Vance: ‘Meow’ – Washington Examiner
At the 2024 Emmy Awards, actress Candice Bergen, famously known for her role in the sitcom *Murphy Brown*, made headlines for her remarks directed at Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance. While presenting an award, Bergen referenced past political criticisms she faced regarding her character’s decision to raise a child as a single mother, mentioning a notorious comment made by then-Vice President Dan Quayle in the 1990s. She humorously noted the progress since that time, asserting that contemporary Republican candidates would not attack women in similar circumstances. Bergen ended her speech with a playful “Meow!” drawing laughter from the audience. Additionally, Selena Gomez joined in on the humor, referencing “childless cat ladies,” further targeting Vance during the event.

Actress Candice Bergen, known for her role on the sitcom Murphy Brown in the 1990s, took aim at the Republican vice presidential candidate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), while presenting an award at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.
“For 11 years, I had the tremendous privilege of playing the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown,” Bergen said before presenting the award for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series Sunday night.
“I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors, had the best scripts to work with, and in one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” she said to the audience.
Quayle had made controversial comments in a 1992 speech that criticized her television show for “mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.” His statements became a nationwide debate and an election-year issue.
“Oh how far we’ve come,” Bergen quipped. “Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids.”
“So, as they say, my work here is done,” the actress said, adding sarcastically, “Meow!”
Singer and actress Selena Gomez also took a swipe at Vance when joking about “childless cat ladies” onstage alongside her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short.
“And Steve, let me just say what an honor it is for me to be working with someone who looks like he’s fallen and can’t get up,” Short told Martin.

Martin jokingly replied back to Short, “And let me say what an honor it is to be working with someone who looks like a former women’s tennis champion.”
“And let me say what an honor it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies,” Gomez quipped in response to the two comedians.
The singer is one of the close friends of Taylor Swift, who recently endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president and embraced the title of “childless cat lady” in her message’s signature as a dig at Vance.
