CBS News to move morning co-host to evening as viewers are ‘hungry for fairness’

CBS News announced on Wednesday that it will move CBS Mornings co-host Tony Dokoupil to its evening line-up as the network seeks to win back viewers who have “lost trust in the media.”
Dokoupil will host CBS Evening News starting Jan. 5, 2026, around seven years after he began co-hosting CBS Mornings with Gayle King and Nate Burleson. CBS Evening News co-hosts John Bickerson and Maurice DeBois announced their resignations in October and last week, respectively. Their final episodes of the show will air this month.
“We live in a time in which many people have lost trust in the media,” CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss said. “Tony Dokoupil is the person to win it back. That’s because he believes in old-school journalistic values: asking the hard questions, following the facts wherever they lead, and holding power to account. Americans hungry for fairness will see that on display night after night.”
CBS News President Tom Cibrowski also praised Dokoupil’s journalistic record, saying he is authentic and “what everyone wants in an evening news anchor.”
In the first month in his new position, Dokoupil will tour cities and towns across the United States. He shared his enthusiasm for the job in the announcement, vowing to deliver “a commitment to trust and the plain truth.”
Dokoupil joined CBS News in 2016. He has interviewed numerous notable people since then, including Vice President JD Vance, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The shake-up is the latest at CBS News, as the network recently named Weiss as its new editor-in-chief after acquiring the Free Press in October. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison touted the acquisition as a means to “modernize content” and its connection with audiences.
Weiss will moderate a town hall with Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, on CBS News on Sunday. The discussion will be available to stream later on Paramount+.
