Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Republican challenger David McCormick are set to face off against each other in November for a seat that will help determine which party retains control of the Senate.

Both Pennsylvania candidates easily won their primary races on Tuesday, as neither candidate had any competitors running against them. The Associated Press called the races for both primaries at 8:01 p.m.

McCormick is running for a second chance to serve in the upper chamber after losing the GOP primary for the Senate to Dr. Mehmet Oz during the 2022 midterm elections.

Now the GOP is hoping McCormick will take down the three-term senator in an election year when Republicans are more favored to win the Senate.

The Keystone State is one of the seven key battleground states that will determine not just who controls the Senate but the presidency and the House.

Republicans have been itching to retake a Senate seat back from Democrats after they flipped former Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey’s seat and see McCormick as the best chance for victory.

The Koch brothers-aligned super PAC, Americans for Prosperity Action, has begun knocking on doors in Pennsylvania on behalf of McCormick. The group’s goal is to have knocked on 1 million doors before the race is over.

Yet Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who defeated Oz in 2022, defended Casey’s reelection bid.

“Bob Casey is going to beat him, and I [don’t think there’s going to be] a poll — reputable, that’s important — that touches him within 3 points because everybody understands he’s from Connecticut,” Fetterman told the Washington Examiner of McCormick’s chances of winning.

McCormick does have a home in Connecticut and owns a home in Pittsburgh.

“He does have some Pennsylvania roots, but he lives in Connecticut, and Trump actually despised him,” Fetterman continued. “And they’re trying to pretend that they get along and everything, and red county Pennsylvania smells that, and he’s gonna come up short.”

Former President Donald Trump endorsed McCormick’s 2024 Senate bid earlier this month during a rally in the Keystone State.

It comes after Trump endorsed Oz in 2022 and blasted McCormick during the GOP primary.
