Capitol police label shelter in place panic as ‘false alarm’.
U.S. Capitol Police Lockdown and Evacuation
The U.S. Capitol Police took swift action on Wednesday afternoon, locking down and evacuating the Russell Senate Office Building in response to a concerning call about a potential active shooter situation.
“A call came in for an active shooter. It appears to be a bad call. No injuries and no shooter were located. MPD is assisting U.S. Capitol Police,”
A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police Department informed the Washington Examiner about the situation.
The Mixed Messages of Bidenomics
At 2:30 p.m., the call to the police triggered an immediate response from Capitol Police, who rushed to the Capitol grounds to evacuate the Russell building.
For over an hour, law enforcement and emergency medical services were on the scene, ensuring the safety of Senate staffers and workers as they were led out of their offices with their hands raised.
“I think at this point, we can say that we found no confirmation that there was an active shooter and that this may have been a bogus call,”
U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger stated during a press briefing.
Approximately 200 police officers meticulously searched each floor of the Russell building, responding to additional 911 calls from concerned employees.
By 4 p.m., the officers had cleared all three floors, finding no evidence of a shooter and no further information to act upon.
Manger emphasized that no gunshots were heard, and there were no victims.
“Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating. We will continue to communicate with the public here,”
The Capitol Police urged the public to stay informed through their official communication channels.
An email was promptly sent to congressional staff, advising them to seek shelter inside their offices or the nearest office and lock their doors due to a security threat within the building.
The shelter-in-place order remained in effect for over an hour as the Capitol Police diligently investigated the events. Finally, at around 4 p.m., they gave the all-clear.
Although lawmakers are currently on their August recess, many staff members and employees are still working within the Capitol.
