Introducing ”Convicting a Murderer”: The Other Side of “Making a Murderer”
Author and Daily Wire host Candace Owens is set to unveil her new docuseries, “Convicting a Murderer” (CAM), which offers a fresh perspective on Netflix’s hit limited series, “Making a Murderer” (MAM).
MAM focuses on the case of Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who were convicted of murdering photographer Teresa Halbach. The series gained widespread attention, with many online voices, including celebrities, arguing for Avery’s innocence.
During an interview on “The Ben Shapiro Show,” Owens revealed that the creators of MAM, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, employed deceptive editing techniques, which she exposes in CAM.
Unveiling the Deceptive Editing Tactics
“So I think one of the things that they were really brilliant at — these two documentary makers — was deceptive editing,” Owens told Shapiro. “If they’re showing you parts of the court testimony, you’re thinking that you’re watching a person respond.”
Owens then provided an example of a police officer appearing tense and untruthful after a specific question was asked in court. However, she explained that the question in the documentary was asked at a different time, meaning the officer’s reaction was not in response to that particular question.
“They just used him sitting up at a different moment and put it next to a question that he was asked at a different time,” she said. “So it was sort of these deceptive editing tricks to heavily suggest that people were either innocent or guilty.”
Owens also emphasized that her research contradicts the apparent narrative presented in MAM. She expressed the significance of including Avery’s family in her documentary, allowing viewers to ask them direct and pointed questions.
Keeping an Open Mind
For Owens, the most important aspect is for people to approach the series with an open mind, even if they hold strong views influenced by Netflix’s MAM.
“I love the opportunity to change people’s minds,” she said. ”And I think that afterwards, again, if you are a person that is willing to exercise that humility, you’re just going to go, ‘Wow, it’s incredible.’ And you will probably not doubt yourself, but you’ll grow from the experience.”
