Can Mike Bobo Continue Georgia’s Offensive Success After Todd Monken’s Departure?

The Georgia Bulldogs football programme has experienced significant changes in its coaching staff with Todd Monken, former Offensive Coach (OC), leaving the team to join the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.

Mike Bobo, a former UGA quarterback and analyst who was part of Kirby Smart’s 2022 staff, was hired by the team to replace him. Bobo has enjoyed some success, but also had his share of struggles as a coach.

After his time as UGA’s offensive coordinator, he was appointed head coach of Colorado State University.

The team managed a record of 7-6 each year in his first three seasons. They also lost in low-level games and bowl games. The 2018 season was particularly difficult. Colorado State suffered embarrassing losses to Hawaii and Colorado, Florida, as well as an FCS-team.

This was the team’s only win during this stretch, a victory against Arkansas at home. Unfortunately, the Rams finished their season with a disappointing 3-9 record. This is the worst record since the Steve Fairchild era.

The 2019 season was progressing and calls for Bobo to be fired grew stronger. After that, he and Colorado State decided to part ways. He continued to be the offensive coordinator for South Carolina and helped them achieve a record of 2-5 under Will Muschamp.

Bobo took over as interim head coach after Muschamp was released from his duties. He led the Gamecocks to a 3-3 record.

He was appointed Auburn’s offensive coordinator the following year. They won six games, losing seven to the other seven. This included a 17-13 loss to #20 Houston in TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl.

Despite these setbacks Kirby Smart of UGA is optimistic about Bobo’s arrival to the team. Smart cites his success as a SEC play-caller as well as over 20 years of experience as a UGA player and coach.

They both played together for Georgia’s football team in the 1990s. Later, they reunited to coach together as Smart worked as an assistant with Mark Richt in 2005.

Monken’s contributions to the Bulldogs offense were impressive, but it is important to keep in mind that his overall record as head coach was not very good. Monken’s NCAA head coaching record of 13-25 shows that his failures as an offensive coordinator are not directly related to his success as a coach.

Bobo will have big shoes to fill as Monken has completely transformed Georgia’s offense in his time at the program. Bobo’s previous offense at Georgia averaged 41.3 point per game, which is slightly less than the 41.1 Monken managed this past season. His experience with the Bulldogs and in the SEC could help him make the transition.

He has faced many challenges as a coach but there is hope that his team will continue to be successful.

Analysts attribute the lackluster performance of Bobo as a head coach to a shortage in roster talent. Bobo should not have to worry about Athens’ talent shortage. The Bulldogs signed the second-best 2023 recruiting group.

The Bulldogs have also brought back many key players on offense. Sedrick Van Pran is back as a center, Brock Bowers as tight end, and Ladd McConkey, wide receiver.

Although it is not clear how he will perform in his new role as a coach, the fans are optimistic that he will be able to continue the team’s offensive success.

While there is uncertainty about the transition from Monken To Bobo, Bobo brings with him a wealth of experience as well as a proven track record.
