California students will learn how to recognize ‘fake news’ so they don’t ‘try to overthrow our democracy’
California to Require K-12 Students to Recognize “Fake News”
Get ready, California students! Starting January 1, 2024, you’ll be diving into the world of media literacy and learning how to spot “fake news.” Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 873 into law, making it mandatory for educators to incorporate a media literacy framework into various subjects like language arts, science, math, and social studies.
Championing Media Literacy
State Democratic Assemblyman Marc Berman, the bill’s sponsor, didn’t shy away from addressing the supporters of former President Donald Trump. He emphasized the impact of misinformation on elections and our democracy, stating, “I’ve seen the impact that misinformation has had in the real world — how it affects the way people vote, whether they accept the outcomes of elections, try to overthrow our democracy.”
The bill aims to equip children and adolescents with the skills of “digital citizenship,” promoting responsible and healthy behavior online. It passed the California Senate with an overwhelming vote of 35-2.
Challenging the Critics
Not everyone is on board with this new legislation. UCLA professor and senior fellow at the Hoover Institute, Lee Ohanian, raised an important question: “But who will teach California’s teachers how to recognize fake news?” He argued that even many adults struggle with identifying fake news, and personal political views often influence one’s perception of what is true or false.
California is not alone in its concern over fake news. A recent survey revealed that approximately half of Americans are uncertain about their ability to identify false political claims. Other states like Texas, New Jersey, and Delaware have also passed similar legislation to promote media literacy.
What are some possible reasons behind the dreamer’s desire to escape and travel to a different country?
There are many possibilities when it comes to dream interpretation as dreams can have different meanings for different individuals. However, one possible interpretation of this dream could be that the dreamer is feeling trapped or restricted in some aspect of their life. The need to escape and travel to a different country may symbolize a desire for freedom or a change of scenery. Alternatively, it could represent a desire to explore new experiences and expand one’s horizons. The appearance of the therapist in the dream could suggest that the dreamer is seeking guidance or support in navigating these feelings of being trapped or restricted. Ultimately, the true meaning of the dream would likely depend on the personal experiences and emotions of the dreamer.
