The Threat to Free Speech in America
Throughout history, authoritarian governments have always posed the greatest threat to free speech. Unfortunately, this threat still exists today, even in America. Thankfully, our robust First Amendment has served as a valuable bulwark against censorious government autocrats. In the past, those on the political Left have been fierce defenders of broad speech protections. However, this is not the case anymore. While many on the Left still claim to support the First Amendment, they often promote ideologies that undermine these protections.
The Assault on Free Speech
The ongoing debate over males participating in female sports is a prime example of this assault on free speech. Radical activists regularly shout down and physically assault anyone who argues against men competing in women’s sports. Shockingly, many leftists ignore these criminal acts and instead blame the victims. They propagate the dangerous idea that the right to free speech does not protect individuals from the consequences of their words. In other words, if someone disagrees with your speech, they believe they have the right to resort to violence or shut down your speech entirely.
The Suppression of a Forum
This suppression of free speech was evident at the Mary L. Stevens Branch of the Yolo County Library. Moms for Liberty – Yolo County, CA organized an event called “Forum for Fair and Safe Sport for Girls,” which aimed to discuss the issue of males participating in female sports. However, a library official shut down the event almost immediately because one of the speakers used the phrase “men in women’s sports.” According to the official, California law prohibits the use of the term ”men” when referring to men who identify as women.

Threats and Responsibility
After a video of the library shutting down the event went viral, the library allegedly received three separate bomb threats. The event organizers condemned these threats, emphasizing that violence is never an appropriate response to speech one disagrees with. However, in response to the situation, an op-ed published by the Sacramento Bee argued that the event organizers were responsible for the threats because their views allegedly aligned with those of the perpetrators.
Conflating Speech with Violence
This argument is nonsensical. It is unfair to assume that the threats came from someone sympathetic to the event. Moreover, no one should be held legally or morally responsible for another person’s unlawful actions simply because they share similar views. This line of thinking disregards logic and reason. Those advancing this argument aim to shut down dissent by conflating speech with violence.
The Importance of Debating Controversial Topics
Throughout our country’s history, we have engaged in debates on controversial topics, such as slavery, women’s suffrage, and prohibition. Both sides of these debates likely presented offensive arguments. However, we trusted previous generations to evaluate these debates without equating speech with violence.
Exercising Our Right to Participate in Great Debates
The same holds true for our current debates on essential topics like immigration, climate change, abortion, freedom of speech, religious freedom, and gender identity. These debates have the power to significantly impact the lives of all Americans. Exercising our God-given right to participate in these debates is at the core of being an American.

While it is crucial to prioritize inclusivity and ensure the well-being of all students, it should not be at the expense of free speech. Preserving free speech in America requires the active defense of this fundamental right. Citizens must be vigilant in challenging attempts to suppress dissent or stifle open discussion. This includes supporting organizations that advocate for free speech, engaging in civil discourse with those who hold differing opinions, and standing up against any form of censorship. It is also crucial for lawmakers and courts to uphold strong protections for free speech, ensuring that the First Amendment remains a safeguard against government encroachment on this crucial freedom.
