California Gov. Stockpiles 2 Million Abortion Pills

The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has acquired as many as 2 million misoprostol pills. These pills are used to terminate a pregnancy, following a federal judge’s ruling last week that sought to halt the FDA’s approval of another abortifacient, mifepristone.

“We will not cave to extremists who are trying to outlaw these critical abortion services,” Governor Newsom said on Monday while making the announcement. “Medication abortion remains legal in California.”

Mifepristone is used in conjunction with misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy within 10 weeks of gestation, according to the FDA. While the FDA has not approved misoprostol for abortions, a study published by the National Institutes of Health indicates that it can effectively terminate a pregnancy when used alone.

Legal battles over the status of mifepristone are ongoing, with the Biden administration appealing a Texas-based federal judge’s recent ruling that brought its approval into question. The case is expected to be heard by the Supreme Court.
