Indian Bridal Magazine Features Non-Binary Model on Cover

A recent digital cover of Brides Today, an English-language Indian publication, has caused controversy for featuring a non-binary model wearing traditional Indian clothing and jewelry. Alok Vaid-Menon, a “transfeminine” activist model, appeared on two covers, one in a teal outfit and skirt, and the other in an Indian dress with a bra-like top and matching skirt, both adorned with lots of jewels.

In response to the negative comments, Vaid-Menon wrote on social media, “I’ve been bullied my entire life. I wish I could be able to walk down the street—and exist in public—without fear of being attacked. I wish I could post an image of myself online without being inundated with hate mail.”

Building a Future of Acceptance

Vaid-Menon continued, “I hope that we dream beyond tolerance towards meaningful acceptance. I hope that we are able to find beauty and pride in our differences. I hope that we are not just safe, but well, and not just seen, but witnessed. Most of all: I hope that we can be free.”

While some social media users expressed disgust and accused the magazine of “stealing women’s identity,” others praised the cover for promoting diversity and inclusivity.
