Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer recently laughed off Democrats who suggested he should retire. He has continued to brush off these ongoing calls for the the left. During an interview Thursday, the 81-year-old stressed he’s far from bothered by the their push for him to step down.

“That doesn’t irk me…I’ll tell you, the truth, I think, is you can always hope for your more mature self, which is there sometimes,’ he stated. “And this is a country in which, and every day I see this in this document, but number one, it is called freedom of speech. That means freedom of thought, freedom of expression.”

Breyers stepping down has become a major point of frustration for progressives who urge him to leave the bench and be replaced while Democrats still have control. When asked if the calls for his retirement drive him crazy, he replied that it’s far from the worst thing to have people to say mean things about him.

“If you’re not prepared…of course people will get upset about all kinds of things, that’s why we have this First Amendment,” he explained. “We have it there so people will say the things that you may not like or I might not like, it’s why it’s there.”

Meanwhile, as progressives continue to grow frustrated with the justice for his refusal to step down, Breyer asserted that he will retire on his own terms.
