Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ is the oldest to top Hot 100
Brenda Lee Makes History as Oldest Singer to Reach #1 on Billboard Hot 100 with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
Brenda Lee has just achieved a remarkable feat in music history. At the age of 78, she has become the oldest singer to have a song reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100. And what better song to accomplish this with than the iconic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
This timeless tune, originally released in 1958, has finally reached the pinnacle of the chart, making it the first time that this classic Christmas song has ever reached #1. This achievement is not only significant for the song but also for Lee herself. It has been 60 years since she last topped the chart in 1960, and now she has done it again, making it her third song in total to achieve this incredible feat.
A Birthday Present Like No Other
As if this achievement wasn’t enough, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Lee’s birthday is just around the corner on December 11, and this news serves as an early birthday present that she will surely cherish.
So, how did Lee manage to claim the top spot? Well, it could be attributed to a few factors. Firstly, a new music video for “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was released last month to celebrate the song’s 65th anniversary. In this video, Lee collaborated with country music legends Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood, creating a fresh and exciting rendition of the beloved song. Additionally, Lee recently joined the popular social media platform TikTok, which may have sparked newfound interest and enthusiasm for her music.
But let’s not forget the significance of dethroning another holiday classic. Lee’s song knocked Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” off the top spot. This is no small feat, considering the immense popularity and enduring appeal of Carey’s hit. In fact, ”Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is only the third Christmas song ever to reach #1 on the Hot 100, alongside Carey’s iconic release in 1994 and “The Chipmunk Song” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, which was released in the same year as Lee’s original version.
While Lee’s achievement is undoubtedly remarkable, it’s worth mentioning that several other Christmas songs also made the list. Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” all managed to secure a spot on the Hot 100, adding to the festive spirit of the season.
Overall, Brenda Lee’s historic accomplishment is a testament to the enduring power and appeal of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” It’s a song that has stood the test of time and continues to bring joy and holiday cheer to listeners of all generations.
