BREAKING: Capitol Police Officers Injured, Complex Placed On Lockdown After Car Smashes Into Barricade; Suspect In Custody

Two Capitol Police officers were reportedly injured and taken to the hospital after a car smashed into the barricade that keeps unauthorized vehicles from entering the complex.

The suspect, who reportedly got out of his car with a knife, is in custody and was also transported to the hospital, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

“CRITICAL INCIDENT: USCP is responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers. A suspect is in custody. Both officers are injured. All three have been transported to the hospital,” the U.S. Capitol Police tweeted. They later corrected their tweet to confirm that the incident took place off of Constitution Avenue.

Video taken on the ground depicted what looked like injured people being attended to near where the incident occurred at the vehicle access point.

A text sent to Capitol staff from the U.S. Capitol Police read: “Capitol: External security threat, no entry or exit is permitted, stay away from exterior windows, doors. If outside, seek cover.”

Ambulances and stretchers also arrived, and further video showed a helicopter landing on the lawn, apparently to pick up the injured individuals.

This story is breaking and will be updated.
