Booster Shots Demanded: Growing Number Of Universities Requiring Third Shot For Spring Semester

A growing number of major universities across the U.S. have added a COVID-19 booster shot requirement for attendance during the spring 2022 semester.

Two new schools added to the list rank among the Big Ten, and both are in Michigan, a state facing surging coronavirus cases in recent weeks.

The University of Michigan announced a new booster shot requirement on December 17 for all students, faculty, and staff members.

“The University of Michigan is requiring all students, faculty and staff on all three U-M campuses to get a COVID-19 booster shot as one of several enhanced mitigation measures to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 during the winter 2022 academic term,” the university said in a letter last week.

“The deadline for the Ann Arbor campus to receive the booster shot is Feb. 4 or as soon as they are eligible thereafter, based on their individual vaccination schedule,” the letter added.

Michigan State University has also announced COVID-19 booster shot requirements.

“All members of our campus community who were fully vaccinated either with a two-dose regimen more than six months ago or a one-dose regimen more than two months ago are now eligible for a booster and should immediately receive one,” Michigan State University President Samuel Stanley wrote.

New York University (NYU) also added a booster shot requirement with a January 18, 2022 deadline, according to a recent update.

NYU requires all students, faculty, employees, and campus visitors to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and upload proof of vaccination as a condition of having access to NYU buildings—both in New York City and at the majority of our Study Away sites in the US and abroad—for the 2021-22 academic year.

NYU now also requires all members of the NYU community to receive a COVID-19 booster vaccination as soon as they are eligible and upload proof of the vaccination by January 18, 2022.

Georgetown University added a similar requirement on December 14.

The University of Notre Dame is among the campuses that will require a booster for attendance, both for residential students and those studying remotely.

Notre Dame’s December 6 communication to students stated:

As an extension of the University’s existing COVID-19 vaccination requirement, the COVID-19 booster is required of all students – undergraduate, graduate, and professional, including students studying or performing research remotely and/or virtually – to minimize our community’s experience with coronavirus.
