Republican-controlled states saw an influx of residents in 2022 as the exodus from high-tax states accelerated.

Three of those states – including Texas, Florida and Tennessee – do not tax regular income, according to a separate analysis from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, a group that advocates for lower taxes.

California, New York, and Illinois on the other side of the spectrum saw the largest population declines in 2022. These states have the highest tax burdens in America. To identify domestic migration patterns, the analysis uses United States Postal Service Change-of-Address data. According to the National Association of Realtors, a growing number of Americans have moved from blue states like California and New York with high taxes to red states like Florida and Texas.

NAR found another reason Americans chose to move to Republican-led States last year: Strong job markets.

“Among the top 10 large areas with the highest inbound move rates, not only was their economy able to recover all the jobs that were lost at the beginning of the pandemic, but there are about 5% on average more jobs now than in March 2020 in these areas,” The analysis concluded. 

The pandemic caused a more rapid recovery of the employment market than the national trend.

In its report, the NAR pointed out that many of those areas where people relocated were in economies that had been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
