Bill Maher says Trump’s ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’ approach drove steep crime decline
Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher suggested that Donald Trump played a role in the recent nationwide decline in violent crime. Maher argued that it’s childish to ignore the fact that the Trump administration’s tough-on-crime policies may have contributed to deterring criminal behavior.According to FBI data, violent crime decreased by nearly 10% from June 2025 to May 2026, following a sustained decline that started in 2022 after the pandemic.

Maher said it’s ”childish to pretend” the Trump administration’s tough-on-crime approach hasn’t deterred criminal behavior in a segment about bipartisanship on Real Time with Bill Maher. Violent crime fell nationwide by nearly 10 percentage points from June 2025 through May 2026 off the back of a sustained, post-pandemic decline that began in 2022, according to the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer.
