Bill Ackman fiercely retaliates against MIT and Business Insider over ‘family attacks
Hedge Fund Billionaire Bill Ackman Takes Aim at MIT and Business Insider
Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman is launching a fierce attack against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Business Insider following allegations that his wife plagiarized parts of her dissertation at the university. In a bold move, Ackman is calling for the resignation of MIT’s chairman, Mark Gorenberg.
Universities Face Growing Pressure Amid DEI Controversy
Ackman has resurfaced allegations against Gorenberg, accusing him of using MIT’s donor-advised fund to support a non-profit organization run by Gorenberg’s wife. This, according to Ackman, puts MIT’s tax-exempt status in jeopardy.
Ackman reposted a thread from December, where he initially made these accusations, after Business Insider published a report revealing at least 15 instances of plagiarism in his wife Neri Oxman’s dissertation. This report came after Ackman had been pushing for the resignation of then-Harvard President Claudine Gay due to her own plagiarism scandal.
Not only did Ackman target Business Insider for publishing the allegations, but he also threatened to review all journalists from the media company to search for plagiarism. He accused the author of the story of attempting to “destroy other people’s reputations.”
In addition to criticizing the story, Ackman drew attention to what he called “apparent tax fraud” by Gorenberg, which he claimed the mainstream media failed to report last year.
“I guess MIT Chairman Gorenberg did not like it when I exposed him for apparent tax fraud using MIT’s donor-advised fund. By doing so, he put MIT’s tax-exempt status at risk,” Ackman wrote. “The mainstream media failed to report on this. They might want to take a closer look now.”
In his original post, Ackman accused Gorenberg of donating money to an MIT donor-advised fund, which was then funneled into a non-profit organization called Parity.org, where Gorenberg’s wife holds key positions. Ackman argued that this violated the rules of donor-advised funds, which are only allowed to support legitimate charities without personal benefits to the donors.
Ackman warned that MIT could face severe penalties from the Internal Revenue Service if found in violation, including losing its tax-exempt status and incurring excise taxes. He claimed that Gorenberg’s actions put MIT’s reputation and tax status at serious risk.
This onslaught from Ackman comes as he and his wife face intense scrutiny over plagiarism allegations against Oxman. Ackman believes these allegations are retaliation for his calls for university presidents to resign over their handling of antisemitism on college campuses.
While Ackman was a vocal advocate for Gay’s resignation, it is likely that her eventual removal was due to a loss of support from the faculty and the coverage of the plagiarism allegations by the student newspaper.
The Washington Examiner reached out to MIT for comment but has not received a response.
What measures can universities take to effectively detect and prevent plagiarism in higher education
Condemned MIT for allegedly turning a blind eye to the plagiarism in Oxman’s dissertation. He accused the university of having a “double standard” when it comes to addressing plagiarism scandals involving prominent individuals.
In response to Ackman’s allegations, MIT released a statement affirming its commitment to academic integrity and stating that they would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The university emphasized that any allegations of academic misconduct are taken seriously and appropriate action will be taken if necessary.
Ackman’s call for the resignation of MIT’s chairman, Mark Gorenberg, has sparked a debate about the accountability of university leaders in handling academic integrity issues. Some argue that holding university administrators responsible for the actions of individual faculty members or students sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the autonomy of academic institutions. Others believe that university leaders should be held accountable for creating an environment that fosters academic integrity and ensuring that proper procedures are in place to address allegations of misconduct.
This controversy comes at a time when universities are already facing growing pressure to address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues. Ackman’s accusations against MIT and Gorenberg further complicate the already complex landscape of university governance and accountability.
The allegations of plagiarism also raise questions about the broader issue of academic misconduct and the effectiveness of plagiarism detection mechanisms in higher education institutions. As technology continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important for universities to invest in robust systems and processes that can detect and prevent plagiarism effectively.
The repercussions of this controversy extend beyond the individuals involved and have the potential to impact the reputation and credibility of both MIT and Business Insider. It highlights the significance of ethical conduct and integrity in the academic and journalistic fields.
Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman’s attack on MIT and Business Insider raises important questions about academic integrity, university governance, and journalistic responsibility. As this controversy unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of truth. Only through open dialogue and a commitment to ethical conduct can we ensure the integrity of our academic institutions and the media.
