Biden to award Springsteen, Mindy Kaling, and Amy Tan arts and humanities medals

President Joe Biden will recognize Bruce Springsteen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gladys Knight, Vera Wang, and more of the 2021 National Medal of Arts awardees at the White House on Tuesday. He will also present the 2021 National Humanities Medals to writers and scholars like Amy Tan, Colson Whitehead, and Ann Patchett at the ceremony. The National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal are the highest honors awarded for advancing the arts and humanities in the United States, respectively.

Both medals are the first of their kind awarded under the Biden administration, as their ceremonies were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last September, Biden surprised Sir Elton John with a National Humanities Medal during a White House event. First Lady Jill Biden is expected to participate in Tuesday’s event in the East Room.

The 2021 National Medal of Arts recipients include Bruce Springsteen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gladys Knight, Vera Wang, and other talents. Meanwhile, the 2021 National Humanities Medal winners are Colson Whitehead, Amy Tan, Bryan Stevenson, and others. In the last few days, many celebrities visited the White House and Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence. For instance, the cast of the Apple TV series Ted Lasso recently met with President Biden to discuss mental health. Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion and Lori Harvey were among the guests at Kamala Harris’s Women’s History Month champagne brunch on Saturday to promote paid family leave.
