Biden Says Tech Companies Must Ensure AI Products Are Safe
President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday that while the danger of artificial intelligence (AI) remains to be seen, technology companies must ensure that their products are safe before they are released to the public.
Biden convened with his advisers on science and technology to discuss the risks and benefits of advanced AI in terms of individual users and national security.
“AI can potentially address some significant challenges such as disease and climate change. However, it must also consider the potential consequences to society, the economy, and national security,” Biden told the team, which includes scholars as well as executives from Microsoft and Google.
AI made headlines in recent months after the release of the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot, which inspired a competition among tech giants to introduce comparable tools. However, this also raised ethical and social concerns surrounding technology that can generate genuine prose or imagery that may appear human-made.
The White House stated that the meeting with the AI team emphasised the importance of protecting rights and safety to encourage responsible innovation and appropriate safeguards, and to reinforce the president’s appeal for legislative action by Congress.
