President Biden Denies Being Asked for Special Counsel Interview
President Joe Biden made it clear on Friday that he has not been approached for an interview by the special counsel investigating his handling of classified documents. Speaking to reporters after a Pilates class during his vacation in Lake Tahoe, President Biden stated, “There’s no such request and no such interest.”
In January, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Robert Hur as the special counsel to investigate classified documents found in President Biden’s garage in Wilmington and the Penn Biden Center.
Robert Hur has been investigating President Biden’s possession of sensitive government documents from his time as vice president and senator. In a statement released by the Justice Department on January 12, Mr. Hur expressed his commitment to conducting a fair and impartial investigation, stating, “I intend to follow the facts swiftly and thoroughly, without fear or favor, and will honor the trust placed in me to perform this service.”
Earlier reports from NBC indicated that negotiations have been taking place between President Biden’s lawyers and the special counsel regarding the terms of a potential interview. The discussions have focused on the logistics of the interview, including how, when, and where it might take place, as well as the scope of the questions.
In June, former President Donald Trump faced indictment by special counsel Jack Smith for mishandling classified documents. On June 13, the former president pleaded not guilty in a Miami courtroom.
