Biden accuses Republicans of undermining the military.
President Biden Calls Out Republicans for Undermining the Military
President Joe Biden used his remarks at the Truman Civil Rights Symposium to passionately address the issue of Republicans turning their backs on a strong national defense. This may serve as a preview of how he plans to counter complaints about “wokeness” in the military during the upcoming 2024 campaign.
“The Republican Party used to always support the military,” Biden stated on Thursday. “But today, they are undermining the military.”
Biden began by condemning Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) for his hold on military promotions, which was a protest against the Pentagon’s travel reimbursements policy for abortions. He also criticized the “48 Republicans who refuse to stand up to him.”
“We don’t have a sitting confirmed commandant of the Marine Corps,” he expressed. “By the fall, we may not have a chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. We may not have military leaders from our Army and Navy either.”
The president referred to this situation as a “partisan freeze” and an “extreme blockade.”
“This isn’t a football game,” Biden added, taking a jab at Tuberville’s background as a college football coach. “The senior senator from Alabama who claims to support our troops is now blocking more than 300 military operations with his extreme political agenda.”
Biden emphasized the urgency of confirming all outstanding military nominees, including the commandant and his pick for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stating, “now, now, now!”
However, Biden didn’t stop there. He also criticized conservative lawmakers who have voiced concerns about “woke” ideological trends in the military, specifically mentioning Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO).
The president framed this criticism as an attack on the military’s readiness, especially when compared to foreign adversaries like China. He vehemently rejected the notion that the military was becoming weak or emasculated.
“Frankly,” Biden asserted, “they have no idea what in God’s name they are talking about.”
It’s worth noting that Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), a potential contender for the 2024 GOP nomination, recently unveiled his own proposal to address “wokeness” in the military.
Biden accused Cruz of falling for “Russian propaganda” and claimed that Hawley supported “insurrectionists” who posed a threat to democracy during the events of January 6th.
Throughout his speech, Biden urged an end to the attacks on the military, while also praising President Harry Truman for his commitment to civil rights and the desegregation of the military 75 years ago.
As Biden delivered his remarks, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the National Defense Authorization Act with a bipartisan vote of 86 to 11.
In conclusion, President Biden passionately called on Senate Republicans to approve all outstanding military nominees and uphold the legacy of Harry Truman by keeping the country safe.
