Biden Apologizes to Muslims for Doubting Hamas Casualty Figures, Report Says
In a surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden privately expressed regret to Muslims for questioning the accuracy of casualty figures provided by a Hamas-run agency, according to a recent report.
The Washington Post highlighted Biden’s public skepticism of the Gaza Health Ministry’s soaring casualty numbers on October 25, stating, “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed.”
However, during a private meeting with five prominent Muslim Americans, the president’s perspective seemed to shift dramatically. The Post, citing anonymous sources, shared accounts of individuals who knew of heartbreaking cases, such as a woman who lost 100 family members.
According to the report, Biden responded with humility, saying, “I’m sorry. I’m disappointed in myself. I will do better.” The meeting concluded with the president offering a comforting hug to one of the participants.
The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, on its website, emphasized that Gaza casualty figures should be viewed with skepticism, as they originate from a biased source. The Gaza Ministry of Health, it noted, is closely tied to Hamas and cannot be considered an impartial authority.
The Post report also shed light on a growing divide within the Biden administration regarding support for Israel. A wave of Palestinian sympathy among American diplomats, defense officials, and aid workers has influenced policy decisions, with many advocating for a cease-fire.
Over 1,000 staffers at the U.S. Agency for International Development support ending Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 people. This shift in sentiment has empowered Arab staff members within the administration, according to the Post.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that the Biden administration has established a “secret cell” of top aides to negotiate with Arab nations. The current pause in fighting, linked to the release of hostages, has strained relations between the White House and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Some officials within the Biden administration hope to transform the pause into a lasting cease-fire, initiating discussions on a two-state solution for the Middle East. The report acknowledged the administration’s awareness of the ongoing anguish experienced by families with loved ones still held captive in Gaza.
Netanyahu, however, remains resolute in his determination to achieve his objectives, stating, “At the end of the deal, we are returning full power to carry out our aims: destroy Hamas, ensure that Gaza won’t return to what it was, and of course, free all of our hostages.”
