Biden Mistakingly Thanks Colombia for Hosting Event in Cambodia

President Biden stayed true to form on the first day of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Cambodia, making a rather notable gaffe.

While attempting to thank the host nation, Biden mistakenly extended his gratitude to the leader of Colombia.

“It’s wonderful that we gather with all of you again,” Biden began. “This is my third US-ASEAN Summit of my presidency, and I was honored to host the White Hou– at the White House in May.  Now that we are back together in Cambodia,” Biden said, “I look forward to building even stronger progress than we’ve already made.”

“I want to thank the prime minister,” he continued, “for Colombia’s leadership in the ASEAN as ASEAN chair for hosting all of us.”

The gaffe appeared to go unnoticed by those in the room, however in the official White House transcript of Biden’s remarks, “Colombia” was  corrected to say, “Cambodia.”

As a South American nation, Colombia has never been a member of nor chaired ASEAN. Additionally, unlike Cambodia, it has a president, not a prime minister.

Biden and other members of the White House staff will be in Cambodia until Sunday.
