Joe Biden honored members of the U.S. Olympic team over their performances in the Tokyo Olympic Games. During a virtual reception on Saturday, Biden said American athletes made their country proud with their performances.
In total, American athletes brought home 113 medals, including 39 golds, which is more than any other country. “America when it leads not by the example of our power, but by the power of our example,” said the Democrat.
Biden praised the Olympians for their courage, even giving a direct message to gymnast Simone Biles for setting an example in her decision to withdraw from certain events. “You had the courage to say, ‘I need some help,’” said Biden. “And you gave an example to everybody, and guess what, by the way, you got back up on that damned beam!”
He also extended an invitation for Team USA to come visit the White House this fall.
I’m so proud of you, @TeamUSA. Thank you for showing what we can do together as one America and as one team. pic.twitter.com/9Qc7kCavCk
