The survey shows that a growing number of Americans doubt his mental capabilities to lead the country, and his support compared to top Republican challengers, particularly Donald Trump, has slipped.

• 63% of American adults do not believe Biden, 80, possesses the “mental sharpness” to perform his duties as president, representing a 9% increase year-over-year.
• A hypothetical 2024 general election matchup shows that Biden is falling behind Trump, with 44% of respondents saying they would “probably” or “definitely” vote for Trump while only 38% said the same thing for Biden.
• Biden also trails Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, with 42% saying they would definitely or probably vote for the Florida governor, while 37% said they would vote for Biden, and 21% were undecided.
• Biden’s job approval rating stands at 36%, down from 42% in February, and his disapproval stands at 56%, including 47% who “strongly” disapprove of the job he’s doing.
• 56% of Americans believe Trump did a better job in handling the U.S. economy, whereas 36% said Biden has done better.

The poll suggests that Biden’s challenge is not only about the perceptions and politics around Trump but about Biden himself. Even among those who believe Trump should face criminal charges in the investigations into whether he illegally tried to overturn the 2020 election results, 18% are inclined to vote for him over Biden.

Democratic strategists and mainstream media figures have sounded the alarm about Biden’s poll numbers, with ABC host George Stephanopoulos admitting that “this poll is just brutal for President Biden.” ABC’s Rick Klein responded, “Absolutely, George.”
