Biden completes first round of radiation treatment for Stage 4 prostate cancer
Former President Joe Biden finished his first round of radiation therapy for aggressive prostate cancer on Monday.
Biden rang a celebratory bell to commemorate finishing five weeks of the treatment at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia.
“Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Penn Medicine. We are so grateful!” the former president’s daughter, Ashley Biden, wrote on Instagram as his family marked the moment.
Photos posted by the former first daughter showed former first lady Jill Biden with her husband at the cancer treatment center, alongside other family members.
A spokesperson for Biden told ABC News it remains unclear if he will require any further treatment.
The former president, who turns 83 next month, announced in May that he had an advanced stage of prostate cancer that has metastasized and spread to his bones. Prostate cancers are graded for aggressiveness in the Gleason grading system, which ranges from 6 to 10, with 10 being the most aggressive. Biden’s office said his score was 9.
“Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” Joe Biden said at the time.
Some medical experts have expressed shock that Biden’s medical team did not diagnose the cancer earlier, as he had likely had it for years.

Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist who served on Joe Biden’s COVID-19 advisory board, told Morning Joe that Biden “did not develop [prostate cancer during his ] … last 100, 200 days” in office.
“He probably had it at the start of his presidency, in 2021. Yes, I don’t think there’s any disagreement about that. … And it is a little surprising to many of us oncologists that he wasn’t diagnosed earlier,” the cancer specialist added. “Either they didn’t test for it or they did test for it, they didn’t report it, and we didn’t get the information as a public.”
