Dean Phillips, Biden’s challenger, deems octogenarians in presidency as ‘risky
Democratic Challenger Warns Against Reelecting Biden in 2024
In a bold statement, Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN), who is vying for the Democratic nomination against President Joe Biden, has expressed concerns about reelecting the current president in 2024. Speaking to the New York Post in New Hampshire, Phillips, 54, emphasized that while Biden is ”a good man” and has been “a good president,” his advanced age poses a danger to the country.
“We’re human beings, and I think it’s irresponsible for Americans to place in the White House presidents who are in their 80s. I think it’s wrong, I think it’s dangerous,” Phillips said.
Phillips further highlighted the potential risks associated with a person over the age of 80 holding the highest office, stating that a medical problem is always looming. He argued that in the current era, the United States cannot afford to take such a risk.
While Phillips firmly believes that Biden is not the right candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump, he also expressed concerns about Trump’s intentions. He cautioned against Trump’s apparent desire to undermine democratic institutions, stating, “There’s danger in an initiative that Donald Trump seems to wish to pursue, which I think is to undermine the very foundations of institutions of democracy.”
However, Phillips disagreed with those who compare Trump to Adolf Hitler, particularly in relation to claims about illegal immigration. He believes that such comparisons only exacerbate the country’s problems rather than solving them.
“I think [Trump is] a man who lacks character, and he’s a narcissist. I do not believe he is analogous to Hitler whatsoever, and I think people who say that are causing worse problems for the country than they’re solving,” said Phillips.
While Phillips sees Trump as a “greater existential threat” to America than Biden, he acknowledges that the incumbent president’s shortcomings will still pose a threat in the future.
Phillips has focused his campaign efforts on winning the New Hampshire primary, where Biden will not be on the ballot due to the state’s refusal to yield to the Democrat National Committee’s request to forgo its first-in-the-nation primary status.

New Hampshire Primary Controversy
The Democratic National Committee’s official list of primary contests places South Carolina first on Feb. 6. However, New Hampshire, which has a constitutional provision mandating its primary contests to be one week prior to any other state, has scheduled its contest for Jan. 23.
“A sitting American president chose to not be on the ballot in the first-in-the-nation primary state,” Phillips told the New York Post. “I think it’s a symptom of a much broader disease, and that is a lack of respect for voters all around the country, including here.”
How does Phillips address concerns about President Biden’s mental acuity and why does he emphasize the importance of effective communication and representation on the global stage
E acknowledged that Trump still commands a significant following and could potentially run for reelection in 2024. However, Phillips emphasized that the Democratic Party needs a fresh face and new energy to lead the country effectively.
Furthermore, Phillips criticized Biden’s handling of certain policy issues, such as the border crisis and inflation. He argued that these issues require a leader with innovative approaches and effective solutions, which he believes can only come from someone who is not burdened by old age.
Phillips also addressed concerns about Biden’s mental acuity, pointing out moments where the president has stumbled or made verbal gaffes. While he acknowledged that age-related cognitive decline can affect anyone and that Biden is no exception, he emphasized the importance of having a leader who can communicate competently and effectively represent the country on the global stage.
However, it is important to note that Phillips’ critique of Biden’s age is not solely aimed at the current president. He argues that electing individuals in their 80s to the presidency is a general concern that extends beyond party lines. He believes that regardless of political affiliation, Americans should prioritize electing leaders who are physically and mentally fit to serve the nation.
In conclusion, Representative Dean Phillips strongly warns against reelecting President Joe Biden in 2024 due to concerns about his age and the potential risks it poses to the country. While acknowledging Biden’s strengths as a good man and his accomplishments as a president, Phillips believes that the United States cannot afford to have a leader in their 80s at a time when innovative solutions and effective communication are critical. Phillips advocates for a fresh face and new energy in the Democratic Party to lead the country forward.
