Biden Commends Numerous Jail Terms for Trump Backers 3 Years Post Capitol Storming

President Joe Biden Celebrates Prosecution of Capitol Rioters

In a‌ passionate address before a crowd in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, President Joe‍ Biden celebrated the prosecution of hundreds of supporters of ⁣his chief political rival, former President Donald Trump. The event marked nearly three years since the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“Since that day, more ⁣than 1,200 people have been charged for their assault on the Capitol, and nearly 900 of them have been convicted or⁤ pled guilty. Collectively to date, they have ⁢been sentenced to more than 840 years in ⁤prison,” Biden proudly declared to the applause ⁣of the crowd.

Biden criticized Trump for referring to the insurrectionists as “patriots” and promising to pardon them if he returns to office. He emphasized that the rest of the nation, including law enforcement, saw the events of January 6 as an act of hate and violence.

Following ‌the storming of the Capitol, the FBI launched a thorough investigation into the individuals present during‌ the demonstration. The Department of Justice has since charged 452 people with various offenses, including assaulting officers and causing serious bodily harm. The⁤ majority of charges, 1,186 ⁣in total, are⁣ for ⁢entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds.

Notably, ⁤even individuals who were not physically present at the Capitol ‌on January 6 have faced sentencing. Former Proud Boys chairman Enrique‍ Tarrio received the longest sentence to date, 22⁢ years behind bars, after being found guilty of seditious conspiracy.

Trump himself is also facing federal charges related to ‍January 6. The indictment, unsealed by special prosecutor ⁣Jack Smith, includes counts of conspiracy to violate ⁤civil rights, conspiracy to defraud the government, corrupt obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy to carry out such obstruction.

“Whether democracy is still America’s sacred cause is what ‍the 2024 election is all about,” Biden declared. “The choice is clear. Donald Trump’s campaign is about him, ⁣not America, not you. Donald Trump’s campaign is obsessed with the past, not the future. He’s willing to‍ sacrifice our democracy to put himself in power. Our campaign is different.”
