Biden campaign selling ‘Dark Brandon’ T-shirts as merchandise for reelection bid
Get ready to laugh out loud! President Joe Biden’s campaign has jumped on the internet meme bandwagon and is now selling T-shirts featuring the hilarious “Dark Brandon” joke. The best part? It’s all in good fun after his 2024 reelection campaign launched on Tuesday.
In a powerful three-minute video that opens with images from the Capitol riot, Biden asserts his desire for the country to have more rights in the future.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we were in a battle for the soul of America — and we still are,” Biden said in his announcement video.
But that’s not all! Shortly after the announcement, Biden’s campaign site started fundraising by advertising a $32 “Dark T-shirt” featuring the “Dark Brandon” meme, a filtered image of Biden with red laser eyes. The description reads, “Best worn while vanquishing Malarkey,” a nod to the slogan Biden used during his previous presidential campaign run.
“No malarkey!” was written on the Biden campaign tour bus in 2019 and received public criticism and comments from late-night hosts such as Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel.
The “Dark Brandon” meme is a play on the “Let’s go, Brandon!” phrase, which cropped up in 2021. In an October 2021 NASCAR race in Alabama, the crowd was mistakenly heard chanting, “Let’s go, Brandon,” reportedly cheering on contestant Brandon Brown for winning his race. It was clarified later that the crowd was actually chanting “F*** Joe Biden,” giving momentum to the phrase frequently used by conservatives.
The year after that, pro-Trump supporters started circulating “Dark MAGA” memes, commonly featuring a filtered image of Trump with a red tint and laser eyes. The meme is often attached to a message supporting a more authoritarian Trump, encouraging him to take power as president. Trump allies showed their support by joining in on the trend.
“Dark Brandon” was seen as a liberal meme to counter “Let’s go, Brandon” and play off “Dark MAGA.” The meme skyrocketed in popularity on the internet last year when a handful of officials posted to their social media accounts after the Inflation Reduction Act passed in the Senate.

Rob Flaherty, the White House’s director of digital strategy, posted the meme to Twitter in August 2022.
But that’s not all! The Biden campaign is also selling $22 coffee mugs, labeled as a “Dark roast mug,” with the same image. The description reads, “Dark Brandon, dark roast. Tea drinkers welcome.”
