President Joe Biden’s campaign didn’t hesitate to use the backdrop of one of the biggest sports events to mock former President Donald Trump.

In a 20-second advertisement released on Thursday, the opening night of the NFL draft, the Biden campaign took shots at Trump for clips that show the former president calling football “boring as hell.”

The video aims to contrast Biden’s football appearances with clips showing Trump taking shots at football. It ends with the message: “Make the right pick in November.”

Ironically, Biden isn’t holding a football any NFL player uses in the last frame featuring him in the ad. The president is holding a Sherrin, an Australian rules football, which looks and is shaped differently from a regular American football — and is used in a different game.

Australian rules football does not feature touchdowns and is closer to rugby than American football.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung quickly hit back with a video of Trump throwing a football through a hole at Buffalo in 1992.

The former president did attend a college football game in September 2023 and has previously owned a football team, the defunct USFL’s New Jersey Generals.

Trump also took the opportunity in three out of the four years of his presidency to sit down for an interview with a media outlet before the Super Bowl, and former President Barack Obama did a Super Bowl interview every year of his presidency.

Biden skipped his last two opportunities to do a Super Bowl interview but did sit down for an interview in 2021 and 2022. He caught the most flak for his most recent absence, a free media opportunity heading into an election year.

His campaign said he decided to skip the interview to let viewers focus on the game, but a Democratic campaign operative told NBC News that it was “a problem” to miss what would’ve been an interview seen by millions of voters.

The NFL draft continues on Friday and Saturday.
