Biden boasts of defying Supreme Court, erasing ‘136M’ student loan debts
President Biden Defies Supreme Court, Brags About Student Loan Forgiveness
During a Bidenomics-focused speech in Milwaukee, President Joe Biden proudly declared his defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling on student loan forgiveness. Despite the Court striking down his $400 billion plan as an abuse of power, Biden has continued to push for smaller rounds of cancellation.
“I went to the Supreme Court to eliminate student debt out there,” Biden exclaimed, earning applause from the audience. “Guess what? The Supreme Court ruled against me, but I still got 136 million people’s debt relieved.”
While this statement raises concerns about the separation of powers, it is also factually incorrect. It remains unclear whether Biden misspoke or simply mixed up his numbers. The Biden administration has actually written off approximately $132 billion in student loan debt for 3.6 million borrowers as of early December. This means that Biden’s claim of relieving debt for 136 million people is an overestimation by about 133 million.
It is worth noting that only 40 million people hold student loan debt, making it impossible for the president to have relieved loans for 136 million individuals. This discrepancy suggests that Biden may have been referring to other types of debt, such as mortgages and auto loans.
Biden’s Critics and the Burden on Taxpayers
Unsurprisingly, Biden’s Republican critics are likely to seize upon another number: the approximately 290 million people who do not have student loans. These individuals are financing the student debt forgiveness through their tax dollars, raising concerns about the fairness and equity of the policy.
