Biden and McCarthy to meet Monday night on debt ceiling.

Debt Ceiling Talks Scheduled Between President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy

President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) are set to meet at the White House at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the debt ceiling. The meeting was not originally listed on Biden’s public schedule, but the pair also spoke over the phone while Biden was aboard Air Force One. Both leaders are committed to avoiding default before the soft deadline of June 1, but have significant differences, with McCarthy focused on cutting spending and Biden wanting to look at taxes as well. The meeting will be held in the Oval Office.

Biden arrived in Washington from Japan late Sunday night, and expressed optimism about the meeting with McCarthy. “It went well. We’ll talk tomorrow,” he told reporters as he entered the White House. However, Biden also noted that there are significant disagreements, particularly on the issue of revenue. “There’s a lot of things that they refuse to entertain,” he said during a press conference before leaving Japan. “And they just said revenue is off the table. Well, revenue’s not off the table. And so that’s what we continue to have significant disagreement on, the revenue side.”
