Biden and France’s Macron Pledge Ukraine Support, Ignore Question on China Protests
French President Emmanuel Macron and President Joe Biden held a joint press conference at the White House on Thursday where both men pledged their continued support for the war efforts in Ukraine while not saying a word about the ongoing protests in China against that country’s authoritarian regime.
When a reporter asked Macron about Biden’s recent request of Congress for another $38 billion of additional funding for support for Ukraine, Macron said, “what is at stake in Ukraine is not just very far from here, in a small country, somewhere in Europe, but it’s about our values. And it’s about our principles.”
As the two men left, a reporter asked Biden, “Do you have a message for the protestors in China?” Biden had no response.
In its attempt to reach “zero-Covid,” communist China resorted to tyrannical and authoritarian measures, locking down citizens and instituting brutal restrictions on movement resulting in citizens rising up over the weekend in protest. The White House officials have said the protestors “speak for themselves” as tensions rise between citizens and the CCP.
Many of the recent protests were spurred by the deaths of at least 12 people in a Urumqi apartment building fire. The residence was sealed shut by CCP officials to stop the spread of Covid and the victims were burned alive.
About the US funding the war in Ukraine, Macron added, “it’s about what we agreed together in the UN Charter, protecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and this is why I do believe that having the US Congress supporting the Ukrainians in that time is very important.”
The Biden administration and Congress have spent over $60 billion funding the war in Ukraine.
“Because if we consider that we can abandon the country and abandon the full respect of his principles, it means that there is no personal stability in this world,” Macro said.
About finding a path to end the war, Macron said, “We will never urge Ukrainians to make a compromise which will not be acceptable for them.”
“If we want sustainable peace. We have to respect Ukrainians to decide the moment and the conditions in which they will negotiate about their territory, and the future,” Macron added.
Concerning the war’s end, Biden said, “Look, there’s one way for this war to end. The rational way—to pull out of Ukraine.”
Biden also said, “I’m prepared to speak with Mr. Putin,” but only in “consultation with my French and my NATO friends.”
