The Biden Administration Urges Texas to Remove Barriers on the Rio Grande River
The Biden administration is requesting Texas to remove barriers on the Rio Grande River that were put in place by law enforcement officials to prevent illegal crossings.
The Department of Justice is threatening to sue Texas over “humanitarian concerns” if the barriers are not removed. These barriers were installed earlier this month.
The DOJ claims that the floating barrier poses risks to navigation, public safety, and presents humanitarian concerns. They argue that it is unlawful for Texas to have installed these barriers.
Governor Greg Abbott responded to this request by tweeting that Texas will not be removing the barriers and that they are prepared to face the DOJ in court.
“Texas has the sovereign authority to defend our border, under the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Constitution,” Abbott tweeted. He also mentioned that they have sent numerous letters to the Biden administration explaining their authority.
Abbott further criticized President Biden’s open border policies, stating that they encourage migrants to risk their lives crossing illegally through the Rio Grande instead of using legal means. He emphasized that Texas is taking action to address this crisis and protect both Texans and migrants.
The buoy barriers, which have been placed in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, are part of Texas’ “Operation Lone Star” initiative to combat the consequences of President Biden’s immigration policies.
The 4-foot-wide orange spherical buoys spin if someone tries to grab onto them, according to the New York Post. The barrier can be adjusted or extended as needed.
Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn defended the use of these buoys, blaming President Biden and the Department of Homeland Security for failing to secure the border.
“Well, we wouldn’t be having this conversation if President Biden and the Department of Homeland Security were doing its job,” Cornyn said. He expressed support for Governor Abbott’s measures to address the situation.
Additionally, the owner of a canoe and kayak rental place has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the barriers will cause him “imminent and irreparable harm.”
