The FBI’s Targeting of Traditional Catholics as Potential Domestic Terrorists
The FBI recently conducted interviews with a priest and choir director associated with a Catholic church in Richmond. These interviews were part of an investigation into “radical-traditional Catholics” as potential domestic terrorists, according to a new congressional report released on Monday.
The report, issued by the House Judiciary Committee’s Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, revealed that the FBI, under President Joe Biden, had abused its counterterrorism tools to target Catholic Americans. The agency even proposed developing sources within the Catholic clergy and church leadership.
Interestingly, while the FBI focused its attention on traditional Catholics, it failed to apply the same “domestic terrorism” label to supporters of Hamas terrorists who have been responsible for a rise in antisemitism. Parents who protested Covid lockdowns and inappropriate content in their children’s schools were also targeted without legitimate basis.
When questioned about the administration’s classification of people making violent antisemitic threats as domestic terrorists, the White House responded ambiguously, leaving the characterization to law enforcement.
Since the terrorist attack on Israel in October, violent and explicitly antisemitic demonstrators supporting Hamas have terrorized Jewish Americans. Jewish students at a Manhattan school had to seek shelter in a library as anti-Israel protesters stormed the building, and Swastikas were even presented at a rally celebrating the massacre of Jews in Times Square.

It is evident that the FBI’s response would have been drastically different had these anti-Israel demonstrations been carried out by right-wingers waving Confederate flags. The agency has previously prosecuted individuals involved in the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville and raided their online communications.
Even the presence of a few Confederate banners at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, garnered significant media attention and resulted in prison sentences. However, the same level of concern is not shown when Palestinian flags dominate the nation’s capital.
Furthermore, eight years after the Confederate flag was removed from the South Carolina state house, the Palestinian flag is now being raised in a town in Massachusetts.
