Biblical film His Only Son takes stand for ‘higher level of artistry’ in first crowdfunded theatrical release

The film His Only Son is set to premiere on Friday as the first crowdfunded nationwide theatrical release. It retells the biblical account of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac.

The director of the film, David Helling, hopes that biblical films, like His Only Son, will raise the standard of quality in artistry for biblical films. He stated that a lack of budget could not serve as an excuse for failing to deliver quality work. Helling emphasized that, unlike typical Christian films, His Only Son is a faith narrative. He said, “I set out to do biblical films, because they’re for the sake of the gospel—not the typical Hallmark with a Jesus tinge over it.”

Angel Studios, the same platform responsible for The Chosen, will be distributing His Only Son. According to Angel Studios CEO, Neal Harmon, their audience is finding a home for “the kind of stories Angel has to offer.” Harmon revealed that crowdfunding for His Only Son had reached capacity within 100 hours, allowing them to triple the theater count nationwide.

Another of Angel Studios’ films, Jesus Revolution, tells the story of Southern California pastor Chuck Smith, who invited hippies into his church in the late 1960s, sparking the real-life Christian movement. The film, which stars Kelsey Grammer from Frasier, has more than quadrupled its original earning expectations by grossing almost $50 million domestically.
