Kentucky governor Andy Beshear used the World Economic Forum in Davos to cast himself as a leading anti‑Trump Democrat, calling the former president a “bully on the playground” and criticizing his Greenland overture as “dumb as hell.” Beshear, who stopped in Stockholm and Helsinki before Davos, sat on panels about U.S. governors and saving the middle class and repeatedly denounced Trump’s recent forum speech as “perilous,disrespectful,and unhinged.” His appearances are part of a broader effort to raise his profile and position himself as a potential 2028 presidential contender; Beshear noted his electability after winning three straight statewide elections in a heavily pro‑Trump state and leads the Democratic Governors Association. Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) is taking a foil stance against President Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland, likening Trump to a “bully on the playground” as the Kentucky Democrat uses the world stage to highlight himself as an anti-Trump figure on the Left.
Beshear stopped in Stockholm and Helsinki before arriving in the far-from-Frankfort Swiss town to sit on several World Economic Forum panels, including a U.S. governors panel and a forum on how to save the middle class. Beshear’s European swing comes as he has begun positioning himself as a 2028 presidential race contender, upping his public commentary against the Trump administration.
“I hope that the people of Europe and our close allies know that America is more than just our President and that the American people believe that Canada are our friends, doesn’t want Greenland as a territory, and understands that our alliances with Europe has created world stability for my entire lifetime,” Beshear said in an interview with CBS.
Beshear called Trump’s push to acquire Greenland “dumb as hell” in the panel with fellow Govs. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) and Kevin Stitt (R-OK). He also bashed Trump’s Wednesday speech before the forum several times as “dangerous, disrespectful, and unhinged.”
His big swings at Trump come just one week after Beshear told Politico he would be Democrats’ best chance of beating Vice President JD Vance in a head-to-head matchup in 2028. Beshear is the head of the Democratic Governors Association.
“I’m a guy who has won three straight statewide elections in a Trump plus-30 state,” Beshear told the outlet. “I think it’s a mixture of both electability and the idea that, here’s somebody that not only could win in a purple state, he wins in a red state.”
But the Kentucky governor was not the only possible 2028 hopeful on the Democratic side to show up to Davos.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), another name floated for 2028, is making his presence known in Davos. Newsom told reporters that the diplomacy between European leaders and Trump is “pathetic” and “embarrassing” in a viral rant.

Newsom is slated to address the forum on Thursday after claiming Wednesday that the Trump administration canceled his appearance at a fireside chat following the president’s address.
Beshear also sat on the governors’ panel across from Whitmer, another possible presidential candidate, though she has backed away from the political pundits’ spotlight in recent months.
