Bernie Sanders endorses Angie Nixon in Florida Senate race

Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed socialist State Representative Angie Nixon in her bid to become Florida’s next U.S. senator. Nixon’s victory came unexpectedly, defeating the favored candidate Alex Vindman despite being outspent substantially. She advocates for raising taxes on the wealthy to fund initiatives like Medicare for All, free childcare, and a nationwide rent freeze-platforms praised by Sanders as “real change.” Nixon will face Republican incumbent Ashley Moody in the November election, though national polls currently favor Moody, and her chances are considered slim. Nixon’s win highlights a broader trend of progressive candidates gaining ground within the Democratic party’s left faction, even in races deemed challenging. The article also notes other recent political developments, including endorsements and primary results across various states.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed socialist state Rep. Angie Nixon in her bid to be Florida‘s next U.S. senator on Thursday.

Sanders’s endorsement comes after Nixon’s shocking upset win against retired Army Lt. Col. and polling favorite Alex Vindman, who far outpaced Nixon in funding but fell by a double-digit margin. Nixon has campaigned on raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for her plans for “Medicare for all,” free childcare, and a nationwide rent freeze, a platform Sanders calls “real change.”

“Angie Nixon is proof that organized people can take on organized money — and win. Outspent more than 16 to 1, she won in a landslide. Working people all over this country are sick and tired of status quo politics and status quo policies. They want change, real change,” Sanders said in a statement.

Nixon will take on Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), who was tapped by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to fill Secretary of State Marco Rubio‘s unexpired term in the Senate, in the November general election. Moody is widely seen as the heavy favorite in the red state.

Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is the latest socialist firebrand to score a victory in the 2026 Democratic primaries, notching another win for the leftist faction of the party against the centrist establishment.

Though Sanders did not endorse her before the primary, she joins the ranks of fellow leftist Senate candidates backed by the Vermont senator who are hoping to break into the rank and file of the upper chamber’s Democratic caucus after the midterm elections. Sanders has backed leftist candidates and federal political newcomers Abdul el Sayed and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan in their respective bids for Michigan and Minnesota‘s open Senate seats.

FIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM FLORIDA, ALASKA, AND WYOMING PRIMARY ELECTIONS

While Minnesota’s Senate race has a “likely Democratic” forecast and Michigan sits as a toss-up, according to the Cook Political Report, Nixon’s election in Florida is a long shot and rated as a “Solid Republican” seat.

The limited general election polls with Moody against Nixon have Moody leading.
