Bernie Moreno highlights Trump support in Senate campaign ad.
EXCLUSIVE: Bernie Moreno’s Campaign Ad Highlights Support from Former President Trump
Ohio Senate candidate Bernie Moreno has released a new campaign ad that showcases the praise he has received from former President Donald Trump. The ad, set to air statewide starting Tuesday, emphasizes Moreno’s endorsements from prominent conservatives like Sens. J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio, Kari Lake, and Charlie Kirk. However, it is Trump’s own voice-over and Moreno’s early endorsement of his White House bid that bookend the ad, solidifying his support from the former president.
“Conservatives across the country are backing Bernie,” states the ad, which was first shared with the Washington Examiner. “It’s because they know Bernie as an outsider businessman who will never stop fighting to put America first.”
Moreno has gained significant endorsements within Trumpworld as he prepares to challenge Sen. Sherrod Brown in what is expected to be a highly competitive Senate race in 2024. However, before facing Brown, Moreno must navigate a tough Republican primary in a state that Trump won by 8 points in 2020.
The ad prominently features Trump’s remark, “We love Ohio and we love Bernie Moreno.” While Trump has not officially endorsed in the race, Moreno is considered a front-runner for that endorsement if the former president decides to weigh in.
Moreno’s main opponents in the GOP primary are Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan. LaRose is also vying for Trump’s endorsement, while Dolan has chosen not to pursue it.
The Ohio Senate race is one of three races rated as a “toss-up” by the Cook Political Report. Brown initially flipped the seat blue in 2006, and he remains a rare example of a Democrat holding statewide office in Ohio.
With 34 Senate seats up for grabs in the 2024 election cycle, Democrats must defend 23, compared to just 11 for Republicans. This puts the GOP in a strong position to flip crucial Senate seats that could potentially shift the balance of power in the upper chamber.
Currently, Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as a tiebreaker vote if needed. As a result, Republicans only need to flip one Senate seat to secure the majority if they win back the White House in 2024. If they fail to regain the Oval Office, the party will need to secure two additional Senate seats.
