Ben Shapiro Reacts To SCOTUS Abortion Decision, Warns Left Will Erupt

The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro reacted to the Supreme Court’s abortion decision on his podcast Friday, calling it a “victory for human life” and warning that the Left will erupt over the decision.

The Supreme Court released a 6-3 decision Friday morning in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which has the effect of overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 abortion case that legalized abortion nationwide.

“This means states are now free to regulate abortion. They are now free to protect unborn human life. That is what this decision means,” Shapiro said. “It means that hundreds of thousands of children who would have been killed in the womb will now live. This is a victory for human life. This is a victory for all human beings who are made in the image of God.”

Shapiro also warned listeners to prepare for a “weekend of rage” since “presumably the Left is now going to lose its ever-loving mind,” noting the recent violent attacks on pro-life clinics and churches.

“There’s going to be a hue and cry across the land where we are told that women everywhere are going to be suffering from back-alley abortions and all the rest,” Shapiro said.

“Part of the court’s job is to say, ‘this is not in our purview cause it ain’t in the Constitution,’” he said. “But according to the Left, everything is in the court’s purview so long as the Left has its own policy prerogatives greenlit by the Supreme Court.”

Shapiro added that, “from a moral point of view, I would love to see the pro-life movement win across the board.”

“But on a constitutional level, the resolution of this constitutional issue, by getting rid of Roe v. Wade and delegating it back to the states, which is where it originally was placed, that is the proper constitutional response to this, barring the reinterpretation of the 14th Amendment to protect unborn human life, which for this court would have been a stretch,” he continued.

In a lengthy 147-page decision, five justices agreed to overturn Roe, with Justice Samuel Alito writing the majority opinion. Chief Justice John Roberts agreed to uphold the Mississippi abortion ban, but he did not believe the court should overturn Roe. The court’s three liberal justices, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Sonya Sotomayor dissented.

The decision also overturned another landmark abortion case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which in 1992 doubled down on the right to abortion access established by Roe.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh penned their own concurring opinions. Thomas’ opinion was “spectacular” and “more correct than the actual majority opinion,” Shapiro said.

Thomas agreed with the majority in his concurring opinion that there is no constitutional right to abortion. He also wrote that “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.” The cases mentioned by Thomas deal with contraception, homosexual sex, and gay marriage, respectively.

“The majority does not have the actual stones to rule like Justice Thomas, which is sad,” Shapiro said.

Meanwhile, Roberts also filed his own concurring opinion, but did not vote in favor of the majority opinion on Roe. Roberts was “precisely as cowardly as you would expect him to be” in his concurring opinion, Shapiro said.

Shapiro dubbed the court’s decision “the best that the pro-life movement could have hoped for,” and said that now, the “real battle on the ground” begins, namely figuring out what kinds of laws can be passed in various states to protect unborn human life.
