Hundreds of people from Illinois have demanded the police be shown more support. This week, Back the Blue supporters spoke out during a Champaign City Council meeting where public comments lasted for several hours.

During the discussions, residents said gun violence was on the rise due to an increase in degrading law enforcement and argued this has caused people to live in fear. Some of the criticism comes in response to a Champaign Police Department officer who was fatally shot in May.

Residents also expressed concerns about the department being defunded. Back the Blue participant Matt Stuckey slammed the city council members who have asked for defunding of the police.

“Now they come out after the murder of Officer Chris Oberheim. They say they support the police,” he explained. “I think that it’s an an absolute slap in the face.”

Residents in the area went on to say increased programs for children 12 and younger also needs to be a priority in order to curb crime in the future.
