Babe Ruth rookie card sells for $7.2 million at auction
A Rare 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth Rookie Card Sells for $7.2 Million
A remarkable piece of sports history was made on Monday when a 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie card was sold for a staggering $7.2 million. This incredible sale now ranks the card as the third-most expensive sports card ever sold.
The card’s fascinating journey began with its first owner, Archibald Davis, a 16-year-old Baltimore paperboy. Davis had a passion for collecting cards featuring players from his beloved team, the International League Orioles. These cards were included in the daily papers, and one fateful day in 1914, Davis stumbled upon the card that would later fetch millions – a depiction of a 19-year-old George Herman “Babe” Ruth.
Over the course of 107 years, Davis collected a total of 15 cards, which were then passed down through his family. In 1998, the family generously loaned the cards to the Babe Ruth Birthplace & Museum in Baltimore, where they were displayed until 2021 when they were sold privately.
“Overall, the card was remarkably well-preserved, thanks to its time spent in the museum’s care for over 20 years,” said Brian Dwyer, the president of Robert Edward Auctions.
Out of the 15 cards collected by Davis, only 10 are known to exist today, making this Babe Ruth rookie card an incredibly rare find. While it may not carry the same legendary status as the Topps Mantle or the T206 Wagner, the Baltimore News Ruth card was considered the most valuable sports card in the late 2000s.
“Ruth himself has a captivating story. Many people are unaware that he was placed under the custody of St. Mary’s Industrial School at the age of 7 until Orioles manager Jack Dunn discovered his talent and became his legal guardian,” explained Dwyer. “This card symbolizes Ruth’s journey from being a ward of the state to becoming one of the greatest figures in American sports history.”
The existence of the Baltimore News Ruth card remained relatively unknown until the 1980s, adding to its mystique and allure. Dwyer recalled an interesting anecdote, saying, “When we sold the record-setting Wagner card for $6.6 million in 2021, we had people asking us who Honus Wagner was and why they should care. However, not a single person questions the significance of Babe Ruth, his impact on the game, the hobby, or American culture. He transcends everything. We believe the Ruth card is the most significant, and it is yet to have its moment in the sun.”
With its rich history and immense value, the 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie card has undoubtedly secured its place as a true treasure in the world of sports collectibles.
