“Smoke filled the air, and people ran,” Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters. “Most of the victims ran into the restrooms at the back of the building, which didn’t have clear escape doors.”

The blaze appears to have started near the stage where a band was performing after a circuit breaker began smoking, causing the power to go out before an explosion sent flames spreading rapidly, according to Charnvirakul.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said there would be an inquiry into whether the venue complied with applicable laws, including permitting requirements. Sittipunt said there may have been a table blocking one of the fire exits, and that the fire’s quick spread was likely due to it traveling across the ceiling.

AT LEAST TWO KILLED IN SHOOTING AT TORONTO MUSIC FESTIVAL

Sittipunt said an investigation is underway, and 63 people were taken to the hospital. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to control the fire.

A popular tourist destination, Bangkok was the site of a 2009 New Year’s Eve celebration at a nightclub that killed 66 people and left more than 200 injured after a fire broke out.
