Arrest Made in Firebombing of Pro-Life Center Thanks to DNA From Half-Eaten Burrito

A former research assistant from Wisconsin university is accused of firebombing a pro-life center in Madison, Wisconsin last Mother’s Day, thanks to DNA evidence found in a half-eaten burrito. The attack on the headquarters of Wisconsin Family Action occurred about a week following the release of a Supreme Court draft opinion, which would eventually overturn Roe v. Wade.

The suspect, Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, 29, of Madison, was arrested in Boston on Tuesday, almost 10 months after a Molotov cocktail was thrown inside the building and a message stating “If abortions aren’t safe then you aren’t either,” was written on the side. He was charged with one count of attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive.

The Justice Department stated that Roychowdhury traveled from Madison to Portland, Maine, and purchased a one-way ticket to Guatemala City, Guatemala on the same day of the attack. He was arrested once he arrived at Boston Logan International Airport.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department National Security Division said, “According to the complaint, Mr. Roychowdhury used an incendiary device in violation of federal law in connection with his efforts to terrorize and intimidate a private organization. I commend the commitment and professionalism of law enforcement personnel who worked exhaustively to ensure that justice is served.”

Investigators found DNA evidence of the suspect from the scene of the attack, on the food waste from a half-eaten burrito that Roychowdhury disposed of in a public trash can. Officers later collected DNA from the food and matched it with the DNA collected from the crime scene, confirming Roychowdhury’s involvement.

If found guilty, Roychowdhury faces a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
