Armenian Genocide Memorial Planned in Irvine Great Park

The City of Irvine unanimously voted Feb. 28 for a Great Park space to be dedicated as a memorial in memory of the Armenian Genocide of 1900s.

Staff from the city suggested that it could be located in the “heart of the park” The Great Meadow is located adjacent to a lake and the open spaces surrounding it. “a space of solemn reflection.”

Vice Mayor Tammy Kim requested the idea first. Kim said that “working hand in hand with the community,” The design of the memorial would be an important part of the process.

“This needs to be community-led, because the community knows what it needs,” She spoke.

Larry Agran, Councilor, stated that the memorial was the first in the park and suggested that more planning be done to make it possible for others.

“Communities are going to come forward and they’re going to ask for recognition and a place in our Great Park … we need to be prepared for that,” He stated.

Irvine resident said that he is a US Navy veteran and son of a genocide survivor. He also retired from law enforcement.

“Every April 24 the Armenian community throughout the United States remembers their ancestral members,” He stated. “If there’s hope that we can get together at this site … we will owe the city council a big thank you.”

Now that the council has approved, city staff will coordinate their efforts with local representatives.
