Ark. lawmakers override governors veto, pass transgender treatment ban

Arkansas became the first state to try and prohibit so-called gender confirmation treatment for transgender minors. On Tuesday, the state House and Senate overturned Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s (R) veto of the measure with a simple majority in both chambers.
Under the new law, those under the age of 18 will not have access to “puberty blockers” or so-called “cross-gender hormone therapy.” Hutchinson defended his veto by saying he thought the move amounted to “government overreach” into the health care sector.
“I don’t shy away from the battle when it is necessary and defensible,” he stated. “But the most recent action of the General Assembly, while well intended, is off course and I must veto House Bill 1570.”

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has already vowed to take legal action.
