Appeal to celebrity: Meet the groups Mike Johnson took his Trump-backed plan to before anyone else

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reportedly enlisted influencers as part of his push to publicize an election fraud bill alongside former President Donald Trump.

After Johnson and Trump made their pitch on the legislation on Friday, several Republican social media accounts touted the SAVE Act. NBC News reported that Johnson’s office gave several of the accounts background information before the unveiling.

The legislation, which has yet to be filed, would require states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls and require proof of citizenship to vote. In federal elections, only citizens are allowed to vote, but in some elections, noncitizens have been allowed to vote for local offices.

Various accounts on X, including Students for Trump Chairman Ryan Fournier’s, “DC_Draino,” and “End Wokeness,” promoted the legislation as “good news” and implored Congress to pass it.

“I 100% support this Act! Do you?” Fournier tweeted prior to the press conference unveiling the legislation.

“PASS THIS BILL,” X user DC_Draino wrote in a post promoting the bullet points of the bill.

“Congress must pass the SAVE ACT, now. We cannot have a situation where illegals are able to vote or register to vote,” X user End Wokeness wrote in a post touting the legislation.

The bill has little chance of passing the Democratic-led Senate or being signed into law by President Joe Biden, but the proposed legislation on one of Trump’s top priorities and an accompanying press conference with the former president came as Johnson has faced threats of a motion to vacate.

The posts largely praised Johnson for his action on the bill, but many responses showed Johnson has lost the confidence of many in GOP audiences as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) threatens the House speaker over votes regarding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and foreign aid.

Trump defended Johnson during the press conference, saying that “it’s not … an easy situation for any speaker” but that he thinks “he’s doing a very good job.”
